What is a Surge Protection Device and do I need it?Updated 2 years ago

Surge Protection Devices, otherwise referred to as SPD, are used to protect electrical installations from power surges, also known as transient overvoltages.

Transient overvoltages can also be described as short duration surges of electricity which occur due to the sudden release of energy. They can be either naturally occurring, for example a lightning strike, or man-made.

An SPD offers protection for devices such as computers, televisions, washing machines and safety circuits, for example fire detection systems and emergency lighting.

Due to new regulations, we are required to offer the installation of an SPD on all installations of an EVIOS One charge point.

The SPD can be installed in your consumer unit or if there is not enough space, it can be installed in an external unit next to the existing consumer unit.

To find out if your insurance company requires you to install an SPD, we would recommend checking with them directly, as some policies may state that equipment must be covered with an SPD or they will not payout in the event of a claim.
